MS Information Day 2010
The branch Information Day held
on 20th March was well received by those who attended.
After a warm welcome from our
branch President, Anne Campbell, the Director of MS Society Scotland, David
McNiven gave us an insight into the society since he took the position last
year. The Society in Scotland is in good standing regarding its financial
position and many positive things are beginning to happen. David made emphasis
on the Vitamin D summit to be held in Glasgow in April, the Scottish Register
and research. In 2010 there will be £1.9 million spent on research in Scotland.
Dr Doug Brown, the head of
biomedical research in the MS Society, gave a very interesting talk about
research including MRI, Paediatric MS, Hookworms(!), CBT (Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy) and Botox followed by recent research news on Stem Cells, Oral
Therapies, Sativex, CCSVI and Vitamin D. In summing up Dr Doug Brown told us
that although much has been achieved much more is still needed.
Dr Barbara Chandler then gave a
talk on Cognition and Relationships and overcoming the problems in both.
Then before lunch David McNiven
spoke again about the recently published New Standards and making us aware of
the ‘essential criteria’ which now exists and what we should now expect from
Borders NHS. He told us this was an ‘exciting time’ and an opportunity for us to
have ‘platinum’ services in Scotland.
“These
standards are a seminal document for people living with MS in Scotland and are
the culmination of many years of hard work. One of the Society’s key priorities
over the next year will be to apply all the pressure that we can to ensure that
Health Boards across Scotland adopt the standards as quickly and fully as
possible.
We will be constantly engaged with our members to monitor progress. 2010 is set
to be an exciting year for the MS Society Scotland with the implementation of
the standards and the holding of a Government sponsored summit on vitamin D”.
After a very tasty lunch there were two workshops; One on Money
Advice and Direct Payments and the other by the branch Therapists.
Many
thanks to our speakers and everybody who attended on the day especially our
visitors from the Eastern Borders Branch, Peebles Branch and East Lothian
Branch.
