Branch Newsletter March 2006
The newsletter for the Borders Branch of the MS Society

BORDERS BRANCH AGM 2006

The Borders Branch AGM will take place on Sunday 7th May 2006 at the function suite, Selkirk Rugby Club. As usual we will begin with lunch followed by the meeting. Time 12:30 for 1:00 pm. Please contact your committee person to confirm attendance and arrange transport, if needed.

This year one or two of our present committee members will be stepping down and we are seeking new people to join us.  No experience necessary.  Enthusiasm and a good sense of humour are recommended.

The MS Society offers training events for new committee members.  We meet once a month.  This year the location of our meetings is Hawick.  (Last year it was Maxton).  We are not looking for people to undertake hours of work for the branch.  What we need are people to make a contribution to the decision-making aspects of the running the branch.  We want your input, ideas and suggestions.  Please give this request serious consideration.  If you would like more information please contact Elizabeth Pope 01896 758499 (epope@tiscali.co.uk) or Judy Eglington 01573 420576.

Multiple Sclerosis Community Co-ordinator

The Borders now has in post an MS Community Co-ordinator.  Her name is Lorna Rogerson and she is currently based at the Hawick Community Hospital.  Hopefully by now you will all have had an initial letter from Lorna and should hear from her again in the future to explain more about the service.  Her role is to provide support, guidance and advice about the management of multiple sclerosis. The first part of her job will be to gather information about people with MS in the Borders and this will take some time.  Lorna will also be co-ordinating with other healthcare professionals about services for people with MS.  She hopes to run monthly clinics in Hawick and at BGH to begin with. She can be reached at 01450 372162 ext. 4374 or email lorna.rogerson@borders.scot.nhs.uk

JS CRAWFORD FUN RUN 2006

This is a big fund raiser for the Borders Branch - thanks to JS Crawford - and we hope that this years event will be as successful as the last two.. Or even better! Tell all your friends to come along and enjoy this great day out.

The course is the same as last year - the 3-mile run (5 K) will begin at 1 p.m., at the Melrose Rugby Club. With an emphasis on fun as opposed to serious competition, fancy dress entrants, novice runners or walkers are all invited to take part.

Whether you’re running, jogging, walking, pushing a buggy, walking a dog or in a wheelchair you’ll enjoy the
picturesque 3-mile route around Melrose.

The date for this years fun run is the 28th May and we need some help on the day. If you feel you could volunteer to help out then please get in touch with Elizabeth Pope 01896 758499 (epope@tiscali.co.uk) Sponsorship forms are available from the branch - lets see if we can beat last years total! Keep a look out in the local paper for more information nearer the time

Dorothy Heddle is looking for wool!

Dorothy very kindly knits all sorts of things to raise money for the branch but she needs a supply of wool - so have a hunt in the cupboards and see if you have any wool hidden away there..
Ask your friends and family too and pass any wool onto your committee person and they’ll make sure that Dorothy
gets it - many thanks!

Mick & Zara go to Sandown Races
If you had told me a couple of years ago that I would be standing in the parade ring at Sandown Park racecourse as an ‘acting’ owner of a beautiful racehorse then I would never have believed it. However that is exactly where I found myself earlier this month.

How proud it made me feel, being a part of this amazing experience and seeing the MS colours out there, in the ring and on the track. It just gave me goose bumps all over.

I stand in awe at what Rhona has achieved. Her dream to run horses to raise money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis certainly has come true!

The success we had at Sandown was really outstanding with Diamond Mick finishing second in his race on the Friday and Scarvagh Diamond finishing 5th on the Saturday, both horses bringing home prize money.

Mick looked fantastic as he entered the pre-parade ring. It was The Grand Military Gold Cup Day at Sandown where all the jockeys are military servicemen and women. We were lucky to have Major Dominic Alers-Hankey to ride Mick. As they headed off to the parade ring, the brass band struck up and Mick danced and pranced, almost to the beat. He was in great form.

On the Saturday as the parade ring cleared, Mike Cattermole of Channel 4 interviewed Rhona live about the Borders MS Racing Club and the charity syndicate. I watched it at home on the Sunday night with tears streaming down my face. It was an excellent interview and I am very proud of Rhona. The way she spoke directly to people affected by MS was great.

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to accompany them the Sandown and if you want to read more about the weekend here.. Jane x
